On the 07 model it’s possible to just peel the sensor from the old drive and stick it on to the new one. These aren’t hard to find, Amazon has them.

The mounting bracket needs to be one designed for an all-in-one PC (so that it puts the data/power ports in the same position as a 3.5” drive). So, you shouldn’t have to worry about the drive being too fast. The drive still works perfectly - it’s just slower than it could be due to being bottlenecked by the logic board. The SSD I’m using is SATA 3, and the logic board only supports SATA 2.

To upgrade an 07 iMac I used a generic 2.5” SATA SSD and a 3.5” to 2.5” mounting bracket. You might be able to find the parts cheaper elsewhere if you buy them separately. I think that if there is no drive at all you should see a grey screen with a “?”.

I’d try taking it apart first and having a look inside before buying parts, and making sure the screen is connected.
